ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This striking “The Intense Gaze” is a powerful contemporary portrait created through the intricate art of Mysore Rosewood Inlay. The composition focuses almost entirely on the expressive face and penetrating eyes of the subject, creating an immediate visual connection with the viewer.

The face is constructed from carefully selected pieces of natural wood in varying shades of deep brown, honey, amber, cream, and warm reddish tones. The contrasting pieces define the contours of the face, eyes, nose, and surrounding forms, while the natural grain of the wood adds an organic texture to the portrait. The expressive eyes become the central focal point, giving the artwork its intense and contemplative character.

Rather than relying on conventional painted shading, the artwork uses natural wood colour and grain as its primary visual language. Each individual piece contributes a different tonal value or texture, creating depth and definition across the face. The irregular, flowing shapes surrounding the features further enhance the sense of movement within the composition.

Created in the Mysore Rosewood Inlay tradition, the artwork is formed by carefully cutting and fitting contrasting pieces of wood into a prepared wooden surface. The natural differences in colour, texture, and grain between the woods are deliberately incorporated into the design, allowing the material itself to become an integral part of the image.

Mysore Rosewood Inlay is a registered Geographical Indication (GI) handicraft of Karnataka, recognised under GI No. 24. The craft is traditionally associated with Mysuru and is known for transforming natural rosewood and contrasting woods into detailed decorative compositions.

Created by artist Mohan, this artwork demonstrates a more expressive and contemporary approach to the traditional craft. The enlarged facial composition, bold contrasts, and highly expressive eyes give the piece a strong modern presence while retaining the tactile character of handcrafted wood inlay.

With its rich earthy palette and powerful expression, “The Intense Gaze” works particularly well as a focal artwork in a living room, study, office, library, or contemporary art collection. It brings together expressive portraiture, natural wood textures, and the distinctive craftsmanship of Mysore Rosewood Inlay.
